Last Week in Geekdom – Your Weekly News Roundup (2/26 – 3/4)


Welcome to the first “Last Week in Geekdom” where I comb through the internet to find the most important news you need to know so you don’t have to. This will be one of the only places on this blog that genre doesn’t matter. I’ll be featuring news stories from across comics, anime, and manga as well as general industry news. Obviously I’m going to miss things or think some things are more important than others. If I’ve missed something you think is important, let me know in the comments below!

Anime and Manga News:

  • Chris Stuckman is releasing a new book entitled Anime Impact: The Movies and Shows that Changed the World of Japanese Animation which will feature essays from writers like Ernest Cline and Doug Walker as well as some Youtube Anime writers. See the announcement here.
  • Rurouni Kenshin creator fined 200,000 Yen for possession of child porn: Read more here.
  • A boycott of the convention Anime Matsuri is underway over accusations of sexual harassment by the CEO and failure to pay guests and vendors among other things. Read more here.
  • Kodansha Comics has released a list of the simulpubs coming to Crunchyroll Manga: Read the announcement from Crunchyrolll.
  • Sales of Digital Manga overtake print sales in Japan. Read more here.
  • 12th annual Seiyuu Awards recognizes the talents of some of the best voice actors. Read who won what here.
  • Virtual Youtuber Kizuna Ai gets promoted to Tourism Ambassador by Japan National Tourism Organization.
  • “The Night is Short, Walk on Girl” wins Japan Academy’s “Animation of the Year”
  • 2020 Japan Paralympic Games mascots chosen by Japanese Elementary school students

  • Sandman is back this August with a spin-off imprint featuring new comics directed by Neil Gaiman. Read more here.
