Welcome back to another installment of “Last Week in Geekdom” where I comb through the internet for all the news you need to know so you don’t have to. Some housekeeping first: if you haven’t already seen my “100 Followers Celebration Post” head over there and check it out. It was written as a thank you to all of you guys, and feel free to answer the question at the end of the post. As for some news highlights for today: there’s some controversy brewing over an anime adaption of the light novel {New Life +] that you can read below; Toonami is pushing back the release of the English-subbed versions of the FLCL animes; and Netflix has decided to get into the comic publishing business. Anime and Manga News

• Kodansha is adding four new digital-first titles to their roster, including: Those Summer Days and Karate Heat.
• The TV anime adaptation for Asobi Asobase will have its broadcast premiere on July 8th.
• Grand Blue anime streaming license picked up by Amazon Prime, premiering July 13th.
• Kemeno Friends director Tatsuki reveals third “Hentatsu” animated short.
• Shium Miora’s novel Feel the Wind gets an anime adaptation through Production IG coming this Fall.
• A new animated film for Monster Strike has been announced for October 2018 and will be titled “Monster Strike the Movie: Sora no Kanata”.
• Sound! Euphonium The Movie: Final Oath is scheduled to release in theaters in the Spring of 2019.
• Pop Team Epic gets new net anime in partnership with Japan’s Racing Association.
• The staff for the new anime adaptation of Baki have announced they will host a livestream event on June 9th with an “unprecedented important announcement”.
• Kadokawa has established a new anime studio called “Engi”. They will work on televised and theatrical anime, pachinko machines, and game promotional videos.
• Grand Blue Dreaming shares new promo and announces a start date of July 13th.
• One Piece is getting a crossover manga with the Fischers Youtuber group on August 3rd as well as an important announcement on July 23rd.
• Amazon Japan has reported the top-selling manga for the first half of 2018. Among them being Attack on Titan, Yotsuba&!, and The Bride’s Stories.
• Gantz and Inuyashiki author Hiroya Oku’s new manga Gigant releases its first volume.
• Toonami delays FLCL Progressive and Alternative anime’s English-subtitled version to November to coincide with the Japanese release.
• The anime adaptation of [New Life +] Young Again in Another World is garnering controversy among Chinese anime fans as it centers around a soldier in the Sino-Japanese War reknowned for killing thousands of people.

Comic News

• Netflix makes the foray into the publishing world with its first ever comic book entitled The Magic Order, which will feature the talents of Mark Millar and Olivier Coipel.
• Rob Liefeld’s self-parody comic character, The Pouch, makes its comics debut this June.
• Eddie Campbell talks with EW about why he’s decided to colorize his famous graphic novel From Hell. This new version will be released in serialized installments beginning in September.
• The Library of Congress has just received the largest donation of comics books in library history, including original storyboards that tell the creation of Mickey Mouse.
• After a glitch caused many comic pros to be denied badges to this years New York Comic Con, ReedPop Event Director Mike Armstrong talks to The Beat about what went wrong.
• Comixology has announced a new “Comixology Originals” program that will focus on a new line-up of creator-owned comics and graphic novels.
• Quirk Books will publish Salvador Dali’s lost Marx Brothers screenplay in graphic novel format, entitled “Giraffes on Horseback Salad”.
