Welcome back to another installment of “Last Week in Geekdom” where I comb the internet for all the news you need to know so you don’t have to. I hope you all enjoyed the mythology special from last month. As for news items this week: Crunchyroll has announced what titles will be leaving their platform following the end of their deal with Funimation; Dark Horse has sold a controlling interest in their company to a Chinese investor; and drama continues on the comicsgate front in two separate articles down below. Anime and Manga News
- Crunchyroll has announced a list of titles that will be leaving the platform following the end of their partnership with Funimation, including: Yu Yu Hakusho, Hyouka, and Snow White with the Red Hair.
- Studio Pierrot has announced it is developing an original anime titled Hero Mask that will debut exclusively on Netflix on December 3rd.
- Poco’s Udon World is now available for digital purchase on Amazon in Japanese with English subtitles.
- HiDive will start streaming Run with the Wind on their platform, with new episodes still coming out as they air on Crunchyroll.
- Wasteful Days of Highschool Girls is getting an anime adaptation, but no premiere date has been announced.
- Kodansha Comics is releasing four new digital first manga this November.
- Warner Brother’s Attack on Titan movie has selected Andy Muschietti for director.
- Hayao Miyazaki and Akira Kurosawa are honored on BBC’s List of of Greatest Foreign Language Films.
- Manga creator Kohske has asked fans to stop sharing scanlations of Gangsta citing heavy financial losses.
- The Anime Tourism Association has announced the top 88 pilgrimage sites.
Comic News
- Bleeding Cool details the in and outs of the defamation lawsuit brought against comic publisher Mark Waid by comicsgate member Richard Meyer.
- Alleged Kentucky Kroger shooter had complained on social media about “SJW’s” and the casting of people of color in originally white roles.
- A new Wolverine comic series is in the works that will explore multiple decades of Wolverine’s life, with each issue being a different time period.
- Boom! Studios has cancelled a publication of webcomic series Husband and Husband following allegations that the artists plagiarized another comic in their previous graphic novel, Spellbound.
- Dark Horse CEO/Founder explains the recent investment by Vanguard Visionary Assets in the company and what that will mean for the future of Dark Horse.
- Netflix has moved up the release of the new She-Ra animated series by three days, now debuting on November 13th.
- Izneo online comic subscription service is coming to the Nintendo Switch, advertising itself as the “Netflix of comics.”
- Image Comics will be stopping DRM-free sales of their comics from their website beginning tomorrow, November 5th.
